Resignation of Governor Douye Diri and Others: The Legacy of Our Heroes Past and Present Will Never Be in Vain
The State Working Caretaker Committee of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) Bayelsa State has received and reviewed the announcement of the resignation of His Excellency, Governor Douye Diri, along with some members of the State House of Assembly, and few other party members of the Party across the State.
The announcement was made today from the Executive Council Chambers of the State Government House in Yenagoa, in the presence of the Rt. Honourable Speaker, Deputy Speaker, some members of the State House of Assembly and a handful of stakeholders of the Party.
A statement signed by Alasuote Wright Derri, Acting State Publicity Secretary of the Party in the State notes, "While we acknowledge this rather unfortunate development, the State Working Caretaker Committee convened an emergency meeting to assess the situation and discuss the implications of these resignations.
After thorough deliberations, the State Working Caretaker Committee has resolved to formally accept the resignations of Governor Douye Diri and all members departing with him. We recognize their constitutional right to freedom of association, and wish them well as they transition to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
On this dark day in our history, we acknowledge the sacrifices of our heroes past and present who gave their all in building the People’s Democratic Party as a true Ijaw Party. These individuals fought tirelessly to sustain and uphold the party, handing the baton of leadership from the Late Chief DSP Alamieyesegha, to Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, to Chief Timipre Sylva, to Henry Seriake Dickson, and to Douye Diri. Each of these leaders has contributed significantly to the growth and development of our party in our State of Bayelsa.
Regrettably, the efforts of our heroes past and present have, by the actions of today’s leadership, been torn into pieces and wasted, leaving behind a sad memory of the departed and a lifetime of pain for those still with us. It is disheartening that in their lifetime, Bayelsa State is no longer a PDP State at this time. However, we assure our members, supporters, Bayelsans and the entire Ijaw nation that this situation is temporary. This is not going to last, as we are committed to working diligently to reclaim our mandates and return the PDP flag and colours to Government House, Yenagoa come 2027.
We hold firm in our belief that even God is involved in this journey and has endorsed Bayelsa State as a PDP State. Despite attempts by strong men and federal forces to snatch the State from our control in 2019, God Himself miraculously restored it to us. That same God is alive and will do it again, and again because Bayelsa is a covenant PDP State.
As we move forward, the present leadership of the party under Acting Chairman George Turnah will strife to protect, defend, and rebuild our party. The PDP remains focused on its core values and commitment to the people of Bayelsa State and the Ijaw nation. We assure our stakeholders and the general public that the party is prepared for this change and will continue to advocate for the welfare and development of our people and our land.
The State Working Caretaker Committee calls upon all party faithfuls to stay united and committed as we navigate this period.
Together, we will work toward strengthening the Party and ensure it maintains its dominance in the politics of Bayelsa State.
