PDP National Secretary Denounces Purported Caretaker Committee in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States


In a strongly worded press statement dated October 1, 2025, Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu, the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has officially decried the formation of caretaker committees for Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, denouncing recent purported National Working Committee (NWC) resolutions as unconstitutional.


The letter, addressed to the National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, highlights a series of infractions against the PDP constitution (2017 as Amended). Senator Anyanwu asserts that duties like issuing notices for meetings and implementing resolutions fall strictly within the remit of the National Secretary’s office, as mandated by Section 36 (1) b and e of the PDP constitution. He further emphasizes that any action or decision reached by an illegally constituted NWC lacks validity and will have no legal consequence.


Denouncing the recent press statement from the National Publicity Secretary regarding the dissolution of the Akwa Ibom and Cross River State working committees and their replacement by caretaker committees, Senator Anyanwu highlights that such directives are null and void since official meeting notices were not issued by his office. He calls the move “provocative and grossly unacceptable,” warning that it grossly undermines the provisions and authority of his position as outlined by the party’s constitution.


Senator Anyanwu urges party leaders to adhere strictly to the constitution, warning against further violation of due process and stressing that “a stitch in time saves nine.” He concludes the statement by demanding retraction of steps taken and compliance with party rules, reiterating his office's esteemed regards.


This latest development signals increasing internal wrangling within the PDP leadership structure, especially as the party grapples with the fallouts from contentious leadership decisions affecting state-level operations.
