PDP Crisis: Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders Issue Six Demands Ahead of Convention
The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new twist on Tuesday, as eminent leaders and concerned stakeholders of the party issued a strongly worded communique outlining six key demands ahead of the party’s proposed national convention.
In the communiqué, signed by former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on behalf of the group, the stakeholders cautioned that failure by the party leadership to urgently address the issues raised would have dire consequences. According to them, “failure to meet these demands would render any purported national convention invalid, as legitimate members of the party would be disenfranchised.”
The PDP heavyweights outlined the following demands:
- Fresh congresses must be held in Ebonyi and Anambra States, in strict compliance with subsisting court judgments.
- A new South East Zonal Congress must be urgently conducted.
- The outcome of the South South Congress in Calabar, already upheld by the courts, must be respected.
- The party should immediately conduct the Ekiti LGA congresses, in line with judicial pronouncements.
- There should be no micro-zoning of offices beyond the general zoning formula already adopted by the National Executive Committee (NEC), in order to maintain peace and stability.
- The national chairmanship position must remain in the North Central, consistent with the zoning arrangement of the 2021 convention.
The communique further emphasized the group’s determination to ensure that internal democracy, equity, and justice remain the guiding principles of the PDP as it prepares for its next phase of leadership.
“The PDP must demonstrate sincerity and respect for the rule of law if it truly desires to reposition itself as a credible alternative for Nigerians,” the statement added.
Party insiders suggest that the intervention of the senior stakeholders signals a growing wave of discontent that could complicate preparations for the convention, especially if the demands are not met.
As the countdown to the convention begins, political observers note that how the PDP leadership responds to these concerns will determine whether the party can project unity ahead of the 2027 general elections, or further deepen its internal divisions.
