PDP Eminent Stakeholders, Concerned Leaders Raise Alarm Over Party Crisis, Reaffirm Sam Anyanwu as National Secretary

...PDP Stakeholders Reaffirm Sam Anyanwu as National Secretary, Demand Zoning of 2027 Presidency to South

ABUJA — At a high-level meeting held in Abuja on Monday, June 9, 2025, prominent members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) under the banner of Eminent Stakeholders and Concerned Leaders reviewed the state of affairs within the party, raising serious concerns about what they described as an existential crisis triggered by the disregard of internal democratic principles.

The group, which comprises party leaders and stakeholders from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, deliberated extensively on the persistent internal wranglings and issued a strong-worded communiqué, warning that the party risks "inevitable self-annihilation" unless urgent corrective actions are taken.

Key Resolutions and Highlights at the meeting include;

The stakeholders attributed the ongoing crisis to the continued violation of the PDP Constitution, particularly Sections 36(1)(a)(b)(c), 47(3)(5), and 48(1)(i), as well as a definitive Supreme Court judgment regarding the office of the National Secretary. They expressed concern that the refusal to implement these provisions is deepening divisions at the NEC, NWC, and BoT levels.

The forum unequivocally reaffirmed Senator Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of the PDP, stressing that all decisions and correspondence not issued by him are null and void and of no legal effect, including notices to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In what appears to be a direct response to mounting internal agitation, the group called on the party to formally zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South, citing fairness, federal character principles, and the need for political balance following eight years of northern presidency under President Muhammadu Buhari.

The communiqué emphasized that only a properly constituted National Convention can remove a serving National Secretary, reaffirming that Senator Anyanwu remains a valid NEC member and empowered by the Constitution to issue notices of NEC, NWC, and National Caucus meetings.

The stakeholders urged both the Acting National Chairman and National Secretary to jointly notify INEC of a proposed NEC meeting, with a clearly stated agenda, as the only legitimate pathway to restore order and legality within the party’s operations.

The forum also expressed strong support for the ongoing work of the PDP National Reconciliation Committee, chaired by Senator Bukola Saraki, and pledged to uphold constitutional governance and resist any actions that threaten party unity.

"We remain committed to defending the soul of the PDP, promoting internal democracy, and ensuring justice, equity, and respect for due process in all party affairs," the communiqué concluded.

The meeting underscores deepening internal challenges within Nigeria's major opposition party as it seeks to regroup and reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
