Gov. Umo Eno Officially Joins APC, Cites President Tinubu’s Leadership as Motivation
Uyo, Akwa Ibom — In a move that has confirmed weeks of intense speculation, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has officially defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing his admiration for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership style and policy direction as his main motivation.
Speaking at a well-attended defection rally held in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, Governor Eno stated that his decision to align with the APC stemmed from his desire to support President Tinubu’s administration, which he described as “visionary and committed to repositioning Nigeria.”
“I am here today, not out of compulsion, but conviction. President Bola Tinubu has demonstrated purposeful leadership, and I want to be part of building that new Nigeria,” Governor Eno said.
The event marked the culmination of weeks of political speculation across Akwa Ibom, especially after the date June 6 began trending as the likely day the governor would formally switch parties.
That speculation became reality as Eno openly declared his allegiance to the ruling APC.
"I have changed my political affiliations but my principles remain. I’m not joining APC from a position of weakness but from a position of strength. We are joining the APC to support President Bola Tinubu and the Senate President. We are joining the APC to align with the centre in order to bring benefits to the state. President Tinubu has taken tough decisions that only Jagaban himself could do. The tough decisions have made more money available to the sub-nationals. No matter which party you belong to, we are first of all Akwa Ibomites. As I move to the APC, I assure you that I will continue to run a bipartisan administration". He stated.
Leading a powerful delegation of APC chieftains to welcome the governor was the Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma.
He was joined by other APC governors from Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun, and Lagos states, along with several federal lawmakers.
“You are welcome to a party that values performance and patriotism,” Uzodinma said. “You have our full support and we look forward to working with you to strengthen our party and deliver good governance to the people of Akwa Ibom.”
The defection triggered a domino effect within the state’s political establishment, as various blocs of elected and appointed officials — including local government chairmen, members of the State and National Assembly, and commissioners — publicly declared their support for Governor Eno and also joined the APC.
However, not all key figures were on board. Ini Ememobong, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport, resigned from his position, signaling internal resistance.
Also absent from the defection ceremony were Hon. Sunday Johnny, a member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, and Kufre Umoren, the local government chairman of Onna LGA — both political allies of former Governor Udom Emmanuel, who is yet to make any public comment regarding the development or his political future.
Political analysts say the governor’s defection is a major realignment in Akwa Ibom’s political landscape and may signal a shift in the state’s long-standing allegiance to the PDP, which has dominated since 1999.
As Governor Umo Eno begins a new political journey under the APC, observers will be keen to see how this move reshapes the power dynamics and governance direction in Akwa Ibom State.
