Wike Warns PDP Against Zoning 2027 Presidential Ticket to the North

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to the North, warning that such a move could lead to a repeat of the party’s electoral misfortunes in 2023.

Wike issued the warning during his monthly media chat in Abuja, urging the PDP to make a clear and public declaration in favour of zoning the presidency to the South.

He argued that any attempt to play political games or sidestep the zoning principle would backfire.

“The party must not repeat the same mistake. Zoning the presidential ticket to the North in 2027 will cost PDP dearly, just like it did in 2023,” the minister stated.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and a key figure within the party, has been vocal about the need for fairness and balance in PDP’s internal arrangements, especially concerning power rotation between the North and South.

In a related development, the minister also weighed in on the political crisis in Rivers State, describing the current ordeal of suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara as “self-inflicted.”

While expressing sympathy for Fubara, Wike noted that the embattled governor is reaping the consequences of his own actions.

The statement adds a new layer of tension to the political dynamics within the PDP and in Rivers State, where internal disagreements continue to spark public debate.
