PDP Secretaryship Crisis: Anyanwu Vows Not to Resign Amidst Alleged Plot by Party Leaders

ABUJA — The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new dimension as the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has vowed not to resign his position despite mounting pressure from key party stakeholders.

Anyanwu, in a no-holds-barred interview with journalists, accused Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Peter Mbah of Enugu State of spearheading a coordinated campaign to remove him before the expiration of his tenure.

Describing the move as “politically motivated and lacking constitutional basis,” Anyanwu insisted that the office of the National Secretary is zoned to the South-East, specifically to Imo State, from where he hails.

He questioned the legitimacy of attempts to nominate a replacement from Enugu State.

He further alleged that Ali Odefa, the former South-East National Vice Chairman who has since been expelled from the party, is behind the push for his removal.

According to Anyanwu, Odefa has been feeding false information to Governor Mbah and others in an attempt to destabilize the party's internal structures.

In a sweeping indictment, the embattled PDP chieftain accused Governors Makinde and Mbah of colluding to install Sunday Ude-Okoye as National Secretary through “unauthorized processes,” including manipulation of party staff and use of illegitimate meeting venues.

Responding to speculations of allegiance to FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, Anyanwu clarified that while they share a personal friendship, it has never compromised his loyalty to the PDP.

He also dismissed reports suggesting the PDP is exploring a merger or alliance, asserting that no such discussions are on the table.

Appealing for calm and unity ahead of the party’s forthcoming convention, Anyanwu warned that any unlawful move to oust him could render all party activities carried out under his leadership since November 2023—such as congresses and candidate nominations—legally null and void.

The PDP is yet to issue an official response to Anyanwu’s allegations, but the unfolding drama highlights deepening fissures within the main opposition party as it struggles to navigate internal power tussles ahead of future electoral contests.
