Urges National Assembly Members to Speak Up on Environmental Degradation

Members of the National Assembly representing states in the oil-rich Niger Delta have been charged to intensify their advocacy for environmental justice in the region, particularly in light of the severe harm caused by decades of oil and gas exploration and exploitation.

This call formed part of the resolutions reached at the fourth edition of the Niger Delta Alternatives Convergence, organized by the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State on Monday 12, 2025.

The theme of the event was “Environmental Genocide: Time for Remediation, Restoration, and Reparations.”

The convergence brought together environmental experts, traditional rulers, activists, and other key stakeholders to deliberate on actionable steps toward mitigating the region's long-standing ecological crisis.

Speaking at the event, Director of HOMEF, Nnimmo Bassey, emphasized the urgency of uniting voices from the region to hold polluters accountable and push for adequate cleanup and restoration.

Delivering the keynote address, renowned rights activist Isaac Osuoka condemned the divestment strategies employed by multinational oil companies.

He argued that such moves were designed to evade responsibility for the environmental destruction they left behind.

Among the key outcomes of the event was the proposal for the institution of an Annual Niger Delta Day to spotlight the plight of the region and ensure sustained focus on remediation, restoration, and justice.

Participants reiterated their demand for reparations and called for collaborative action to protect the environment, livelihoods, and health of the people of the Niger Delta.
