NIGER DELTA INTELLECTUAL REBELS DEFEND NEW ASSOCIATES, EBILADE EKEREFE
...Call for Objectivity and End to Politicization of Public Apologies
Yenagoa, Bayelsa State – May 9, 2025 — In a strongly worded response to recent developments in Bayelsa State, the Niger Delta Intellectual Rebels have come out in staunch defense of the NEW Associates group and Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe, describing recent criticisms against them as politically motivated and divisive.
The group condemned a publication released by the Concerned Youths of Bayelsa State, which sought to malign Comrade Ekerefe over his recent public apology to Governor Douye Diri.
According to the Niger Delta Intellectual Rebels, the apology should be interpreted as a statesmanlike act of goodwill aimed at fostering reconciliation, not as an act of political subservience.
In a statement signed by its leader, Akekere Jerry, the group expressed deep concern over what it termed "selective outrage and political opportunism," noting that genuine peace-building efforts should be encouraged rather than manipulated for political gain.
“The apology tendered by Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe is a mark of maturity and humility. Attempts to politicize this gesture are not only misguided but harmful to the unity and development of Bayelsa State,” the statement read.
The Niger Delta Intellectual Rebels lauded the NEW Associates and Comrade Ekerefe for their ongoing commitment to constructive engagement, peaceful dialogue, and responsible advocacy principles they say are essential for progress in a democratic society.
Reiterating their support, the group urged the public to look beyond partisan sentiments and focus on actions that promote peace, unity, and the welfare of all Bayelsans.
“The people of Bayelsa deserve a political atmosphere that fosters development, not one marred by bitterness and political witch-hunting,” the statement concluded.
