Jonathan, Diri, Obi, Igali, Okaba, Others Receive Remains of Late Ijaw National Leader, Pa Edwin Clark in Yenagoa for Commendation Service


The remains of the late Ijaw national leader, Senator Chief (Dr.) Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, OFR, CON, arrived at the Bayelsa International Airport from Abuja around 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2025. The body was received by former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Ambassador Godknows Boladei Igali, and the leadership of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), before being moved in a solemn procession to Ijaw House, along the Sani Abacha Expressway in Yenagoa, for a commendation service.


The dignified event drew notable personalities, including former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, INC President Prof. Benjamin Okaba, INC Vice President 2 Se-Alabo Nengi James, and other prominent Ijaw leaders and stakeholders, who gathered to pay tribute to a man regarded as a towering voice and unwavering advocate for the Ijaw nation and the Nigerian state.


During the commendation service, speakers extolled Pa Clark’s enduring legacy, his contributions to regional development, national unity, and his role as a fearless elder statesman and defender of minority rights.


Later in the evening, at about 5:00 p.m., the remains were moved to Warri, Delta State, for a brief stopover at his residence on Swamp Road, where a service of songs was held in his honour. The body was then taken to his hometown, Kiagbodo, in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, for a social night wake-keep that continued until dawn.


The final interment is scheduled to take place today, Tuesday, May 13, 2025, in Kiagbodo Town.

Some of the notable Ijaw highlife (Owigiri) musicians who performed at the night event include Barrister Smooth, Alfred Izonebi JKing, Gen. Best May, Hero Beremi, among others.
