Entertainment: University of Port Harcourt Honours Columbus Irisoanga with Stage Performances, Candlelight Procession

Port Harcourt, Nigeria – May 21, 2025

The Nigerian film and theatre community came together in an emotionally charged tribute to honour the life and legacy of veteran actor and lecturer, Columbus Irisoanga, fondly known as “Iyoo” — a nickname derived from his famous catchphrase that endeared him to fans across the country.

The tribute event, held at the Crab Theatre in the University of Port Harcourt, featured drama presentations, tributes from colleagues and former students, and a candlelight procession to celebrate the man widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most talented and versatile stage actors.

The late Irisoanga, who until his passing served as a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies at the University of Port Harcourt, was remembered for his immense contributions to both Nollywood and the academic world.

Known for his passionate performances, mentorship, and down-to-earth personality, he was described as a bridge between the traditional theatre culture and contemporary screen acting.

In his remarks at the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, praised Irisoanga as not just an actor, but a consummate thespian and cultural icon who left a profound impact on the lives he touched.

“Columbus Irisoanga was a rare gem in the Nigerian entertainment space. He embodied the very essence of theatre — creativity, discipline, and emotional truth. As a lecturer, he went beyond the classroom to shape lives. As a performer, he breathed life into every role he took on. His absence will be deeply felt,” Prof. Georgewill said.

Other speakers at the event described Irisoanga as humble, approachable, and ever willing to work with both budding and established producers.

They noted that despite his fame, he remained grounded and supportive, playing fatherly and leadership roles in the industry.

The candlelight procession, which followed a series of captivating stage performances in his honour, served as a solemn farewell to a man whose signature expression, “Iyoo,” has become symbolic in Nigerian pop culture.

The evening’s events are part of a lineup of memorial activities leading to his burial scheduled for the weekend.

The Nollywood and theatre communities, particularly in Rivers State and the University of Port Harcourt, will sorely miss Columbus Irisoanga, whose legacy as a performer, teacher, and mentor will continue to inspire future generations of Nigerian actors and creatives.
