Cyber Stalking: Analysts Call for Nationwide Awareness Campaign

By Perekpo Raphael, Yenagoa

Public affairs analysts in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, have called on the government and its relevant agencies to launch comprehensive sensitization campaigns on cyber stalking to enlighten Nigerians on the implications of online harassment and other cyber crimes.

Speaking to correspondent in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, the respondents noted that many Nigerians unknowingly commit cyber stalking due to ignorance of the law.

They emphasized the urgent need for awareness to prevent citizens from falling foul of the recently signed cybercrime legislation.

Cyber stalking, as defined by the act signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, involves the use of technology to monitor another person’s social media activities, browsing history, or email accounts. It also includes sending threatening messages or content online.

The analysts warned that the crime poses significant risks not just to victims, but also to national cyber security.

They noted that cyber stalking is punishable by a fine of up to ₦7 billion and a three-year jail term, depending on court rulings.

They called on the government, non-governmental organizations, and civil society to initiate public orientation programs, particularly at the grassroots level, to bridge the knowledge gap and promote responsible use of digital platforms.

The growing rate of cyber crimes across Nigeria underscores the need for proactive public education to ensure citizens are aware of their rights and responsibilities in the digital space.
