Bayelsa: Indigene Appeals to Government Over Deplorable Ikolo Road Condition

By Perekpo Raphael

Yenagoa, Bayelsa State — A passionate appeal has been made to the Bayelsa State Government and elected representatives at various levels to urgently intervene in the deplorable condition of the Ikolo Road, which has become a nightmare for residents, especially during the rainy season.

In a heartfelt message directed to government authorities, a concerned Bayelsan and teacher, Kariyai Priska lamented the suffering endured by the people of Ikolo, a community located within the Bayelsa Central Senatorial District.

She noted that the poor state of the road is having a crippling effect on education, commerce, and general mobility, with students, teachers, traders, and commuters bearing the brunt of the hardship.

Priska, who had a terrible experience on the road during official duties to Ikolo Community to supervise the ongoing WAEC examinations notes;

“I want to use this medium to call on the Bayelsa State Government, the councilor representing Ikolo people at the Yenagoa legislative chamber, the chairman of Yenagoa Local Government Area, the House of Assembly member representing Yenagoa Constituency One, the member representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma-Opokuma Federal Constituency, and the Senator representing Bayelsa Central — please put the Ikolo Road into consideration,” Priska pleaded.

According to her, while the state government under the leadership of Governor Douye Diri has made commendable progress in the construction and rehabilitation of roads across several parts of the state, Ikolo has remained neglected, leaving its people at a disadvantage despite their strategic location in the state capital territory.

“It is not easy for the people living in Ikolo, especially during the rainy season. The roads are nearly impassable. Our students get soaked on their way to school, teachers struggle to reach their classrooms, and everyday commuters risk their safety to travel in and out of the community,” she said.

Ikolo, a semi-urban settlement within Yenagoa Local Government Area, is home to hundreds of families and serves as a link to adjoining communities.

However, despite its proximity to the capital city, the community lacks critical infrastructure, with the road network being a major concern.

The appeal comes amid the ongoing infrastructural drive by the Prosperity Government of Governor Douye Diri, which has seen the commissioning of several major road projects across the three senatorial districts.

Priska expressed hope that the state government, known for its people-focused development agenda, would heed the call and ensure that Ikolo is not left behind.

“I want to appreciate the government for constructing roads in so many parts of the state. Please, Your Excellency sir, consider the Ikolo Road as well. Thank you. God bless Bayelsa State. God bless the people of Ikolo. God bless His Excellency Governor Douye Diri,” Priska concluded.

Residents of Ikolo are hopeful that this latest appeal will draw attention to their plight and lead to swift government action.

Many say the rehabilitation of the road will not only ease transportation difficulties but also improve economic activities, educational access, and overall quality of life in the area.

Efforts to reach local government officials for comments were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
