YENAGOA – The 16 Brigade Nigerian Army has organized a one-day sensitization workshop on human rights and professional conduct for its personnel in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

The workshop, which focused largely on drug abuse and its associated dangers, was part of ongoing efforts to align troops' activities with the vision of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede

The one day sensitization workshop was held under the supervision of the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Nigerian Army, Major General Gold Chibuisi.

Major General Chibuisi, while addressing the soldiers, emphasized the importance of discipline and professionalism in the military service.

He said the training was necessary to keep soldiers well-informed on proper conduct and the importance of upholding human rights, both on and off duty.

“Our duty goes beyond securing the nation's territorial integrity,” he stated. “We must also remain professional in our engagements with civilians and stay true to the Nigerian Army’s core values.”

A major highlight of the workshop was an interactive session that featured actor Osita Iheme, popularly known for his role in Nollywood, and a representative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Both facilitators engaged troops on the harmful impact of drug abuse, especially among security personnel.

According to the NDLEA official, the rise in substance abuse within the security sector has contributed to increased cases of trigger-happy behavior and abuse of power by some uniformed officers.

The official noted that regular sensitization programs like this could help reverse the trend.

The workshop is in line with the Nigerian Army’s renewed focus on civil-military relations and internal discipline, and it reflects the leadership’s commitment to a more responsible and rights-conscious force.
